Returning Home – Post Trip Clean-up Tips

If you’re like me, after a trip all you want to do is prop your boots up! You worked hard to prepare for the trip (using our handy prep checklist) and had a wonderful time with your favorite horse.

But before you start dreaming of your next adventure, it’s important to properly clean-up and store your trailer. That’ll get you out of your driveway faster the next time, and keep your trailer shiny and new years longer!

Unload & Secure Items

Unload all the equipment and supplies you’re likely to need before your next trip. Anything you leave in the trailer should be secured in a place safe from weather but with adequate ventilation to prevent mold or musty smells.

Floors

Raise the nose of the trailer. Remove all mats in the horse area and wash them thoroughly with soap and water.

If you have aluminum floors give those a good wash, too. Urine is corrosive to aluminum and will damage your trailer over time. Treated wood floors don’t require washing as often but we recommend at least monthly or after two uses.

After washing the mats and floor, let everything dry then re-install the mats.

And if you have an LQ/fridge, don’t forget to level the trailer when you’re done!

Black and Gray Tanks

Drain and wash out the black and gray tanks. When you’re finished, put a bit of water back (about 1/8 of a tank) and add deodorizer. This will keep your trailer smelling good for your next use.

Holding Tank and Water Lines

Drain and flush all fresh water tanks and water lines. Leave it empty and then fill it up just before your next trip. This will prevent that rotten egg smell.

Winterizing

If you’re up north where it freezes, be sure to keep the interior of the trailer above 40 degrees so you don’t have to “winterize” the water system. You can do this with the onboard heating system or a small electric heater.

Cleaning

Wash down the exterior with soap and water and clean all interior surfaces, as needed, to protect your investment and keep it looking good!

LP Tanks

Check and replace the LP tanks as needed. I suggest you always carry two full LP tanks as spares. Store them safely.

Parking and Storing

Park your trailer and plug it in to household power. Be sure your 12-volt master switch is in the “on” position and leave your refrigerator running. This will keep your onboard batteries charged and prevent the refrigerator from having mold and mildew.

If you’re storing the trailer for a long time leave it unplugged from household power, keep the 12-volt master switch off, and open the refrigerator door. A few days before its next use, plug it in, turn on the fridge, and you’ll be ready to saddle up!

Keep An Eye On Your Trailer

Check your trailer now and then between each use to make sure all systems are ok and it’s ready for your next trip at the drop of a hat. Sometimes the best adventures show up lickety-split and you wouldn’t want to miss out because you’re not prepared!
